Grape variety Syrah
International Features:
Origin: Syrah is originally from the Rhône Valley in France but is now grown in many wine regions around the world including Australia, USA, Chile, South Africa and Spain.
Flavor: The flavor of Syrah varies depending on where it is grown and production techniques, but typical flavors include dark fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum, along with pepper, spice, and smoke. Notes of chocolate, leather and tobacco can also be found in some styles.
Style: Syrah can be produced in many different styles, from light and fruity to heavy and full-bodied. Some of the most well-known styles are the French style, with higher acidity and finer tannins, and the Australian style, with rich fruit character, soft tannins and hints of eucalyptus.
Properties of Syrah in Germany:
Origin: Syrah has been cultivated in Germany since the 1990s, primarily in the warmer wine-growing regions such as the Palatinate, Rheinhessen and Baden.
Flavor: German Syrahs often have dark fruit flavors such as blackberries and blackcurrants, along with notes of pepper, spice, and chocolate. Compared to some international styles, the taste can be a little more subtle.
Style: German Syrahs are often produced in a dry or semi-dry style and can pair well with hearty dishes such as red meat and game. Some German winemakers also produce Syrahs in barriques, which gives the wine additional complexity and depth.
