Wine-growing area
From the Drachenfels you can already see the first vineyards near Unkel. We are here in the large Petersberg area, the only vineyards in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The Middle Rhine growing area is easy to find. We start in Bonn and travel about 120 km up the Rhine to Lorch. For up to 50 days, the thermometer in the 120 kilometers of vineyards along the Rhine rises above 25 degrees. On this stretch, steep slopes and terraces open up to the left and right of the Rhine, mostly planted with Riesling, which makes up around 67% of all grape varieties, followed by Pinot Noir with around 8.7% and Müller-Thurgau with around 6.3%.
The cultivation region is divided into the two areas of the Siebengebirge in the north and Loreley in the southern part. The areas include 11 large layers and 111 individual layers. The large Petersberg location covers the entire Siebengebirge area. The remaining 10 major locations are thus distributed over the Loreley area.
The soil in the best locations is characterized by greywacke, slate and volcanic rock. As a heat store, Father Rhine ensures a year-round mild climate in the top locations directly on the river.
The relatively small growing area of the Middle Rhine is one of the warmest regions in Germany. The VDP.GROSSEN LAGEN® and VDP.ERSTEN LAGEN® are all located on the left bank of the Rhine, facing south and east between Oberdiebach and Spay. Some of the vineyards are extremely steep and terraced - their management is complex. The floors consist largely of slate and weathered greywacke.
