Vineyard Doctor

When more than 130 wine merchants and winemakers from Mosel, Saar and Ruwer first gave a taste of their skills in Berlin in May 1904, two of the 236 wines on offer stood out due to the incredible price of 10 Reichsmarks per bottle: One of them was a “Berncasteler Doctor "Of the 1893 vintage. Such recognition is no coincidence. It is the combination of a south-westerly orientation resulting in long exposure to the sun, of weathered slate rock as an effective heat store in the subsoil, and of the steep slope that gives the terroir its special position.

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® DOCTOR is located with its steep up to 70 percent facing the Moselle above the old town of Bernkastel. It turns from southwest to south and enjoys long exposure to the sun with high intensity due to its orientation and steepness. The dark soils made of stony Devonian slate weathering with a high proportion of fine earth also serve as a heat store and at the same time secure the water supply through their water holding power. The DOCTOR site, with its 3.25 hectares, is exposed to the wind at 130 to 190 meters above sea level and is largely still planted with real vines.

History: The single vineyard Doctor is one of the most famous and once most expensive vineyards in the world. Legend has it that the Archbishop of Trier Boemund II was seriously ill in 1360 and no medicine helped. He was then allegedly cured by drinking two bottles of Bernkasteler wine, which was then named "Doctor". However, it is documented that King Edward VII (1841-1910) of Great Britain drank it as medicine. At the beginning of the 20th century (1904) the wine achieved 10 gold marks per bottle in Berlin. That corresponded to about one twelfth of a month's wages for a chemical worker. Other well-known lovers of the Doctor were Kaiser Wilhelm II. (1859-1941), US President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) and the German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer (1876-1967).
