Vineyard

The steep vineyard terraces of the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® RÖTTGEN rise up from the banks of the Moselle like a natural wonder. With a gradient of up to 170 percent, the RÖTTGEN near Winningen is one of the steepest vineyards in Germany. The slates were formed in the sea under reductive conditions and are blue in colour. However, in our hot microclimate, the iron in the stones oxidizes quite quickly. After a short time they get their typical yellow-brown color. Petroleum is even boiled from rocks that are exposed to the sun for a particularly long time - they then get a blue shimmer. Due to its steepness, the rock in the Röttgen was invincible until modern times. Only after the wars of liberation was it in the 1820s, as the winegrowing pioneer Johann Philipp Bronner (1792-1864) put it so beautifully, "...blasted with powder and worked by many helping hands in such a way that the whole thing was now an excellent vineyard that has been wrested from nature by art and human hands. It seems incomprehensible to the passing wanderer how these individual parts can be scattered between rocks and often not connected at all, only cultivated or provided with fertilizer and the like, since they do not seem to be connected at all, but art has all the obstacles of Nature conquers..." The terraces supported by dry stone walls are between 80 and 180 m above sea level, the orientation is SSE. (Source: VDP.de)
