The famous VDP.GROSSE LAGE® SCHARZHOFBERGER is particularly characterized by its unique soil. Nowhere on the Moselle is the gray and reddish slate as weathered as it is here. The rock content is a high 70 percent. The fine earth is clayey-silty with a crumbly structure - the reddish color of the slate is due to the inclusion of iron. The GL SCHARZHOFBERGER is quietly located like a wooded table mountain east of Wiltingen in a wind-open transverse valley of the Saar. Its slopes face south and southeast, and in the west also slightly southwest. The slopes are 30 to 60 percent sloping to steep and lie between 190 and 310 meters above sea level. The site is 28 hectares. The microclimate is rather cool due to the wind, with sometimes large temperature fluctuations - which particularly favors the production of delicately fruity wines. In the center of the GL there is a heat-storing depression. The forested mountain ridge ensures the water supply. Info: The Scharzhofberg single location is one of the most internationally renowned white wine locations - high prices (bids) are regularly achieved at auctions. The labels only mention the location, “Scharzhofberg” or “Scharzhofberger”, but not the municipality. History: The location was donated to the St. Marien monastery in the year 700 and was subsequently managed by the monastery. In 1797 it was auctioned off as part of Napoleonic secularization and experienced an enormous increase in value - in 1896 a plot of 0.3 hectares cost 90,000 gold marks. (Source: VDP.de)
