wine description
2020 MEERSPINNE Riesling GG
VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2020 MEERSPINNE Riesling Grosses Gewächs | trocken
It lies on a foothill that slopes southeast to the Rhine. Since it is also in the exit area of the Gimmeldinger Valley, the microclimate is shaped by the large day-night differences that arise from the nightly cold air stream from the Palatinate Forest and ensure fine acids and freshness.
The foothills, in the middle of which the sea spider lies at an altitude of 170-200m above sea level, consists of massive limestone in its subsoil. A mixture of red sandstone rubble eroded down the slope and blown calcareous loess gradually settled on this limestone ridge. This combination gives the sea spider a fascinating combination of fruitiness and minerality. Extremely straightforward and almost puristic on the one hand, there are also delicate yellow fruit aromas on the other. The wines are always dense and complex, but never fat or heavy.
Of course, they give great pleasure with their youthful aromas, but the wines only reveal their true quality after a few years in bottle storage.
As a rule, the early-ripening grapes that are used in the VDP.Gutswein are read aloud. The harvest of the sea spider VDP.Grosse Lage then takes place in one or two more passes, with the grapes being carefully selected only when fully ripe, healthy berries are harvested at the optimal time in each case. The yields here are usually only 40 hl / ha, so that the grapes achieve an optimal fullness of taste.
The berries, gently transported to the press house as whole grapes, are mashed and then pressed gently and slowly after a not too long maceration time of 3-6 hours. The must is only slightly clarified by sitting overnight and then fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeast. Unadorned and untreated, the wine matures for a long time on the yeast and fine yeast in stainless steel and in large, classic wooden barrels until bottling.
