wine description
2020 VOGELSANG Riesling GG
VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2020 Neustadter Vogelsang Grosses Gewächs | dry
Delivered to the Bavarian royal court in the 19th and early 20th centuries and sung about in poetry, the Neustadter Vogelsang has been forgotten due to speculation on building land. The great nature and the resulting protection thwarted the bill and so the vineyard came into our biodynamic hands in 2017 after a few years of conventional cultivation. Now we have awakened the spirits again. Certainly one of the most exciting projects for many years in the Palatinate and far beyond. After several years in which we have bottled the wine as VDP.Ortswein under the name Neustadt V., the time has come with the 2020 vintage. The Reniassance of a large vineyard and Neustadter Vogelsang is on the label for the first time in 50 years.
The soil consists of shell limestone that was formed more than 200 million years ago and which came to the surface when the Upper Rhine Rift collapsed and is unique in this form on the Mittelhaardt. The vineyard slopes steeply to the south with a slope of up to 50%. Due to its location at the exit of the Neustadter Valley, at an altitude of up to 260m, there are large temperature differences between day and night, which create a lot of tension in the wine.
The cooler high location and the stony shell limestone give the wine a lot of freshness, elegance and powerful minerality. In addition to the classic aromas of yellow fruits, it shows a lot of dark spice and herbal saltiness. Of course, it already gives great pleasure with its youthful aromas, but the wine only reveals its true quality after many years.
The Neustadter Vogelsang VDP.Grosse Lage is harvested in two rounds, with the grapes being strictly selected, only fully ripe, healthy berries are harvested at the optimal time in each case. The yield here is only 40 hl / ha, so that the grapes achieve an optimal fullness of taste.
The grapes, which are transported to the press house in small boxes, are mashed and then gently and slowly pressed after a not too long maceration time of 1-2 hours. By allowing it to sit overnight, the must is only slightly pre-clarified and then fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeasts at a very warm temperature. Unadorned and untreated, the wine matures for a long time on the yeast and fine yeast in large, classic wooden barrels until bottling.
