VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2021 IDIG Riesling Grosses Gewächs | dry
The VDP.Grosse Lage Idig is one of the most excellent sites in the Palatinate and, thanks to our monopoly-like ownership, it also represents the core of our estate. The wines produced here belong to the style-defining wines of the Großes Gewächs category. Year after year, they are celebrated almost all over the world and are counted among the best wines in their category. Both in the Gault Millau WeinGuide and in the Eichelmann wine guide, they are included in the small, exclusive selection of the most important German Grand Crus.
This noble vineyard was first mentioned in a document as early as the 14th century as the Hofkammergut of the Palatinate electors. The monopoly-like size of 4 hectares in a prime location, which is an absolute peculiarity in the Palatinate, can be traced back to this possession of the Count Palatine. By Palatinate standards, the vineyard falls steeply to the south-south-east. However, a gentle wind constantly flows down from the Stabenberg through the Klausental, which with its drying effect keeps the vineyard healthy for a long time.
The Idig rests on a mighty limestone massif, which was formed from limestone deposits after the Upper Rhine Graben collapsed in the Tertiary. The topsoil consists of terra fusca, which was created from lime and clay in connection with the red sandstone rubble that was washed down from the Haardt Mountains to the Mittelhaardt hills over many thousands of years. In the topsoil you can find countless limestones but also a good amount of basalt, which was brought here from the Forster Pechsteinkopf about 150 years ago.
The wines are always full of elegance, saltiness, fruit and density. Due to the high minerality, all of this shows itself in a subtle unobtrusiveness. They have a polished fruit acid and are always silky and round. Of course, their youthful aromas give great pleasure, but the wines only reveal their true quality after a few years in bottle storage.
As a rule, the early-ripening grapes that are used in the VDP.Ortswein Könisgbach are read aloud. The harvest of the VDP.Grosses Gewächses then takes place in one or two more passes, whereby the grapes are harvested under strict selection only fully ripe, healthy berries at the optimal time in each case. The yields here are usually only 40 hl / ha, so that the grapes achieve an optimal fullness of taste.
The berries, which are gently transported to the press house as whole grapes, are mashed and then pressed gently and slowly after a not too long maceration period of 3-6 hours. The must is only slightly clarified by sitting overnight and then fermented spontaneously with the vineyard's own yeast. Unadorned and untreated, the wine matures for a long time on the yeast and fine yeast until it is bottled in large, classic wooden casks.
