VDP.GROSSE LAGE®: 2020 Assmannshausen
HÖLLENBERG Spätburgunder Grosses
Gewächs | dry
Our great Pinot Noirs, or Pinot Noirs as they are known internationally, come from the Assmannshäuser Höllenberg, which is considered the most famous German red wine location worldwide. Goethe praised this wine during his Rheingau trip in 1814 and this wine was served to many prominent visitors to Assmannshausen, including Kaiser Wilhelm II and the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath. Gerhart Hauptmann personally ordered his Assmannshäuser Höllenberg from the crown. With a slope of up to 60% to the south-west, the most striking Pinot Noirs in the Rheingau grow here on slate. Through small yields, selective handwork and the careful use of barrique barrels, after years of maturation in the Krone winery, a Pinot Noir is created that is clearly reminiscent of the classic Burgundies with its scent of violets, its pronounced aromas of blackcurrants and its silky tannins. The wines only come onto the market four years after the harvest.
