Vineyard
The municipality of Oestrich in the Rheingau includes the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® LENCHEN, which is located at an altitude of 110 to 135 meters. Facing west to southwest, it has a slope of 5 to 15 percent. The soils consist mainly of loess clay with pebbles. There are also heavier tertiary, iron-rich clay marls and quartzite. The GL LENCHEN, where Riesling predominates, is well moistened by water veins even in dry years. The walls that surround them store heat during the day and release it again at night. History: It is not entirely clear where the name Lenchen comes from. Two approaches are known: Firstly, the name could refer to a “mountain lean” towards the Pfingstbach, which bordered on the original individual location. Secondly, it could derive from a “small fiefdom”.

The location with an approximately 12-15% gradient to the west extends along the Pfingstbach above our winery directly to the north and is at an altitude of 120 - 170 m above sea level.
The soils consist of fertile, gravelly loess, interspersed with iron-rich quartzites and clay marls. An old common name is “Eiserberg”, which refers to this rock base.
The Große Gewächs come from a special plot in Lenchen. It is located just a few steps away from our winery and was planted in 1964. Very narrow rows and the old vines develop an absolutely magical overall taste.
Vinification:
100% selective, careful hand picking
Gentle whole grape pressing over several hours
spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts
the natural composition of the must is not changed
18 months on the full yeast in the traditional “piece barrel” (1,200 l).
