The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HIPPING is located at an exposed point on the Red Slope between Nierstein and Nackenheim at an altitude of 80-174 meters above sea level. The steep slope with a slope of 60 to 120 percent drops in the direction of the Rhine, which is quite wide at this point, in a south-easterly direction. The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is mainly located on the steeper upper slopes of the Rotliegend in the single layer Hipping. This is a red colored, heavily weathered clay slate. The microclimate is influenced by the warmth of the lake-like extended Rhine, the intense morning sun and the heavily weathered red slate. The majority of the HIPPING GL grows Riesling. History: The HIPPING was called "Hupbuhl" around 1550 - it is assumed that it could have been a goat hill, since Hippe means goat in Middle High German and Buhl hill. (Source: VDP.de)
