Vineyard

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KREUZ is located in the slightly hilly landscape between Oppenheim and Dienheim, which is somewhat distant from the Rhine. The core of the site has mighty loess banks, and its soils are interspersed with fragments of coarse limestone and shell limestone. With a 30 percent gradient, the KREUZ GL is a rather flatter location. It faces south to east. The main grape variety is Pinot Noir. History: At Kühling-Gillot, KRANZ GL is known as the “papal position”. The background: The 1999 Pinot Noir was given to Pope Benedict as mass wine. Since then, the red wine from the KREUZ GL has been the Chateauneuf du Pape from the Rhine, so to speak. The KREUZ GL is probably named after a high sandstone cross that stands at the foot of the vineyard. (Source: VDP.de)
