The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® ÖLBERG is located a little away from the Rhine above Nierstein. The location is south-south-east oriented and still belongs to the red slope, which here turns away from the Rhine. The soil in the selected parcels of the Niersteiner Ölberg is determined by the Rotliegend, the iron oxide-containing, regionally typical and landscape-defining red shining slate. Its structure is partly very rugged, which enables the vines to take root deeply. The ÖLBERG GL lies at a height of 80 to 170 meters. It includes the steep sections of the slope with gradients between 65 and 120 percent. Due to the southern orientation and steepness, the ÖLBERG GL benefits from the intense solar radiation, but is sometimes exposed to stronger winds. The defining grape variety is Riesling. History: It is believed that the Mount of Olives got its name because of the oily consistency of the wines made here.
