Morstein

Vineyard

The vineyards of the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® MORSTEIN are 180 to 240 meters above sea level on the central slope of the imposing and majestic Morstein single layer rising from the glacial valley of the Rhine. It stretches as a pure south-facing slope into western Gundersheim and up to a high plateau at 280 meters above sea level. The slope is 20-25 percent. In the upper layer of MORSTEIN GL, there are heavy clay marl soils with limestone deposits. The subsoil is dominated by water-bearing limestone rock layers, which ensure an optimal supply of nutrients and minerals, even during longer periods of dryness. The hard-to-root, stony limestone subsoil and the late ripening with an extremely long vegetation period characterize the wines. Mainly Riesling and Pinot Noir grow in MORSTEIN GL .. History: Morstein (then “Marsten”) was first mentioned in 1282 in a deed of donation to the Cistercian Abbey of Otterberg (Palatinate). The name probably goes back to a boundary stone, a "Marstein".
