The approximately 30 hectare Pettenthal site is located south of the city of Nackenheim and, along with the HIPPING site, is one of the core elements of the Red Slope. It is halfway between Nierstein and Nackenheim, facing east to south-east, directly above the Rhine. A small part even has pure southern sun. The PETTENTHAL GL is up to 90 meters and begins above the flat foot of the slope with a gradient of up to 70 percent in the upper areas. The soil, especially in the steep parts, consists primarily of the red, iron-containing clay slate, which gives the red slope its name, and which has a fine-grained structure here. The humus layer is extremely thin in the best plot and nutrients for the vine can only be found deep in the stony soil. The higher and steeper the tub, the more difficult the living conditions are for the vines. That is the prerequisite for great wines. The microclimate is determined by solar radiation, which is increased by the light reflection from the Rhine, with the sun shining on the slopes early on over the open Rhine-Main plain. The east location protects against cold winds.
