wine description

Sommeliers Black Tie Riesling Grand Cru | Riedel

Stuart Pigott, English wine journalist with a preference for Riesling, realized a dream. The very best Rieslings of the 1990 vintage (exclusively dry Spätlese) were carefully selected and collected for a tour. After the white grape variety Chardonnay dominated the taste profile due to new plantations worldwide, the Riesling was supposed to prove its qualities for journalists in Paris, London and New York. The right glass was also necessary for this. Riedel sent suggestions from the existing range, and the choice fell on a red wine glass developed for Sangiovese (Chianti). Pigott and his winemakers had defined this shape as ideal in tastings from different glasses. They were particularly impressed by the varietal, pure fragrance intensity (peach) that Rieslings of the late harvest gradation show in this glass.

Due to high extract values and alcohol (13 degrees and more), the typically strong acidity is embedded in the fruit. The egg-shaped form shows the acidity to such an extent that the breed and mineral flavor are preserved. The wine loses breadth and power (high alcohol content) and thus gains in elegance. The complexity of the Riesling is perceived harmoniously on the palate. Arcel Guigal (top winemaker from the northern Rhône) is the godfather of this glass. It is thanks to him that after a two-year development phase (1993-1995), this form was determined as the best for wines from the Rhône region, the Syrah grape variety. Syrah, one of the oldest grape varieties, was planted in this region by the Romans. Syrah gives dark, dense wines with strong tannins and good aging potential. The glass promotes the typical scent reminiscent of toasted bread and black olives. The shape and the flow behavior give the wine a velvety structure with a balanced taste. The tannins are woven into the fruit, making the tannin sweet and losing the drying, bitter taste on the palate.
