Geheimrat J. Wegeler
The history of the Wegeler wineries is closely linked to the history of Riesling. Julius Wegeler married Deinhard's daughter Emma in 1861. After her father, August Deinhard, passed away unexpectedly, Wegeler, previously the export representative of the famous sparkling wine cellar, was entrusted with the management of the company. The company flourished and so the decision was made to buy a winery in the Rheingau in 1882.
The vineyards in Rüdesheim and Oestrich-Winkel are still owned by the Wegelers today - as is the manor house on Friedensplatz in Oestrich-Winkel, where the winery administration is still based.
The Bernkastel manor was founded by Julius Wegeler in 1900. After the legendary purchase of a large part of the Bernkasteler Doctor, he had a wine press house built in the Cues district in 1902 and 1903 based on the principle of gravity. The background was the idea of distributing the wine production over three floors and thus using gravity to let the wines run at their own weight and speed on the way through the individual production steps - while largely dispensing with pumping, decanting or any other different kind of physical strain.
The total ownership of the two Wegel manor houses in the Rheingau and on the Moselle is currently 60 hectares. With 45 hectares of vineyards in the Rheingau, the company is one of the larger producers in the region. (Source: Website Weingut Wegeler)
